Third-gen iPod touch observed in testing

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 | 122 views

Apple is already testing a third-generation iPod touch, information from Pinch Media indicates. The analytics group has tracked a device using the “iPod 3,1″ moniker online, which is in keeping with Apple’s standard hardware versioning . The second-generation Touch, for example, is designated iPod 2,1, while the iPhone 3G is iPhone 1,2. Pinch says it has encountered “a few dozen” instances of iPod 3,1 devices going online, in all cases running apps from a collection of approximately two dozen major, third-party titles. The activity mirrors the kind that preceded the announcement of the iPhone 3GS, and may therefore point to Apple having complete or near-complete hardware undergoing practical evaluation. Apple is most likely to reveal the device in September, when it has taken to announcing iPods for the past several years. ‘Naughty’ dice app quietly denied by Apple?

Friday, July 3rd, 2009 | 186 views

Trichotomy Media is complaining that its Naughty Loaded Dice iPhone app has, possibly, been quietly rejected by Apple. The app has yet to receive an approval or a rejection after a month, and should therefore still be sitting in Apple’s queue. The company notes that although the app does focus on bedroom activity, it still stays clear of any profanity or explicit images. Apple has drawn considerable controversy over sex-related apps, as a result of inconsistent policies. A pornographic title, Hottest Girls, was recently approved by Apple, but later removed in spite of clear warning labels and the presence of parental controls in the iPhone 3.0 firmware. By contrast, an e-book app was initially rejected for referencing the Kama Sutra , but then approved following media controversy. If Naughty Loaded Dice is accepted by Apple, Trichotomy expects to sell it for $2. PasswordWallet 4.4.7 improves voice-over, auto-typing

Friday, July 3rd, 2009 | 147 views

Selznick Scientific has released Password Wallet 4.4.7 , an update to its password-management software for Mac OS X and the iPhone. PasswordWallet can organize passwords into different categories, allowing groupings such as website logins, credit card passwords, credentials and others. The application can export to text, Safari bookmarks, encrypted web pages and text-to-iPod. It works using a master password and retrieves, synchronizes and copies passwords, with support for auto-type across multiple web pages. PasswordWallet utilizes BlowFish encryption algorithms with 448-bit keys, while users can keep the master password in the OS X Keychain. The desktop version offers expanded HTML export options and improved voice-over support for visually impaired users. Version 4.4.7 adds JIS keyboard compatibility for auto-typing , while the minimized windows now have simple document icons. Bug fixes involve an editing record issue, an auto-typing issue and label exporting problem. The iPhone version of PasswordWallet adds iPhone 3.0 clipboard support for complete records copied as text, as well as username, password and other data. The new version also integrates backup capabilities, creating an encrypted HTML file that can be accessed from iTunes backups and then decrypted on any platform. Auto-type works with more websites and a prompt has been added to lock buttons. The new version features wider tool-buttons and shorter category subsection for better use of space on the iPhone screen. PasswordWallet 4.4.7 requires a network connection and Mac OS X 10.4 or higher or iPhone 2.0 or later (copy and paste features require version 3.0). The desktop software costs $20 and the iPhone app is $5 on the iTunes App Store. The company makes Palm- and Windows Mobile-compatible versions as well. Apple aims for patents on iPhone RFID, haptics

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 | 0 views

A variety of Apple patent applications have been newly published by the US Patent and Trademark Office, exposing possibilities the company has been considering for the iPhone and iPod touch. Unusual filings include one for an RFID tag reader , which would be embedded within a handheld’s touchscreen, allowing users to scan an RFID tag simply by passing the device over top. An iPod or iPhone could alternately be made to operate as a tag itself, quickly transmitting information such as personal identification. A more recent filing suggests that Apple may be interested in implementing haptic feedback for its touchscreens. Users would receive slight vibrations whenever touching part of a display, such as a on-screen button or a slider. The advantage, Apple says, is that users could finally control one of its multi-touch devices without looking at it directly, which is descibed as “inconvenient, or even dangerous” in some circumstances. Haptic feedback is already present on a number of other cellphones, such as the BlackBerry Storm and the HTC Magic . Concepts which could arrive in future iterations of the iPhone OS include event-based modes , used to instigate device settings whenever certain conditions are met. Sound and call reception could be disabled when a meeting is scheduled, for instance, and power-hungry apps and tramsitters could be shut off whenever the battery is low. Settings could also be linked to remote infomration, such as news reports and weather forecasts. Similar proposed automation might permit scheduled communications , such as an SMS or e-mail message delivered on someone’s birthday. The technology could likewise be used to set up a call if a previous one was missed. Matching this is the idea of ” intelligent and customizable communications ,” which could allow for different reply messages and availabilities, based on who, when and where someone is trying to contact a user. Sony unveils iPod dock with Wi-Fi streaming

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 | 139 views

Sony on Tuesday added a pair of iPod speaker docks that center on its first network-aware system. The NAS-Z200iR (shown) puts all its controls on an advanced visual remote that also serves as the center of a Wi-Fi streaming system. Besides controlling iPods and other physical media on the stereo itself, the remote can share media streamed from DLNA-supporting devices like the PlayStation 3 or PC software as well as to browse Internet radio stations. The minimalism hides a larger array of physical sources including CDs, AM/FM radio, an aux-in jack and a USB port. Sony’s system puts out 40W of total sustained power and is due to ship to at least Europe in mid-September. A second system also confirms earlier leaks . The CMT-Z100iR shares the audio system of the networked model but mounts all the controls back on the main unit with “stealth” displays for the time and music selection. It continues to play all the same sources, but its simpler design ships earlier, arriving next month in both black and white colors. US launch information hasn’t been provided for either audio device but should appear soon. id Software to bring three Quakes to iPhone

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 | 135 views

id Software co-founder John Carmack has announced that the company will be bringing three Quake titles to the iPhone. Carmack adds that he may not be heavily involved in the projects, which should be mostly handled by other developers. In addition to the Quake offerings, id is also said to be contemplating an iPhone version of its next PC game, Rage. Wolfenstein RPG, Doom 2 RPG and Doom Classic are also slated as iPhone titles. The Quake titles planned include Quake, Quake 2 and Quake Arena. The original PC series is generally considered one of the most influential amongst first-person shooters, having been the first to popularize 3D and online play. Development schedules for the ports have not been revealed, but Carmack does note that that he is hoping to test MegaTexture, part of the technology behind Rage, on the iPhone 3G S. Apple pulls ‘Hottest Girls’ pornographic app

Thursday, June 25th, 2009 | 87 views

Following public criticism , Apple has pulled the pornographic app Hottest Girls from the App Store. The title was thought to be the first to include full or partial nudity, along with a 17+ rating for “Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity.” The app developer and Apple were blasted by organizations such as MediaMarch , a group that believes pornography inspires crimes such as rape and murder. “It is being packaged in a tempting way and will be disastrous for youngsters who are not equipped to deal with such content,” MediaMarch co-founder Miranda Suit told MailOnline . Apple is expected to loosen restrictions on App Store content, as the iPhone 3.0 firmware integrates parental controls. The company has rejected a number of apps due to offensive language. A Tweetie update was halted due to foul language in the search results, while the e-book reader Eucalyptus was initially rejected because of links to Project Gutenberg which offers the Kama Sutra . Apple eventually reversed course and approved both titles. Filed under : Apple Other story tags : App Store Original source: feeds.macnn.com , delivered by rss-farm.ru
