Our friends at the FiiO headphone- and mobile player paraphernalia company sent me their newest oeuvre for reviewing – the FiiO E7, a portable headphone amplifier and USB sound adapter (also often incorrectly called pars-pro-toto ‘DAC’, as the cool people like to refer to sound interfaces), successor of the popular E3 and E5. Unlike some other Chinese manufacturers that cater to an ‘audiophile’ demographic, FiiO managed so far to release products that are of quite high build quality and having good performance while still keeping a fair price. To put it bluntly – in my opinion FiiO doesn’t rip their customers off unlike some other manufacturers, and the E7 is yet another case in point. Despite the E7 being the least inexpensive FiiO product so far, the not so high asking price of around $80 gets one a quite nifty and versatile audio toy.

There is a great group of developers in our forum programming new applications for the Creative Zen X-Fi2. To date they have created 36 applications that range from simple sound boards to solitary to the classic pong. In a recent advertisement sent out via email, Creative pictured and touted these member created applications as “NEW enhanced features!” without crediting its creators whatsoever. Most developers have mixed emotions as our X-Fi2 Development Moderator, Habhome stated: “ It’s both an honor and a bit of a let-down. They could’ve asked before. ”. I tend to agree, it’s fantastic that Creative is paying attention to the community but a big disappointment that there is no dialog or acknowledgment of their hard work. So Creative, step up and recognize who is creating “NEW enhanced features!” to your products. It’s the right thing to do. When Stian, a friend of mine, came to me a few days ago and told me I could now find his music on various online music services I just had to find out how. It’s no secret that record companies are becoming more and more uselss with most of them being sadistic about both stealing the artist’s money and chase pirates, but I was unaware of just how easy it had become to publish music on your own. There are apparently several ways to go about this using various services that do the work for you, but the one Stian used is called Zimbalam . You basically pay them €30 (Euro, a little over $40) and your album will then magically appear on various music services a few weeks later. These include Amazon MP3, iTunes, Spotify, eMusic, Napster and Rhapsody as well as some smaller services. This of course doesn’t help you with the recording part of the production process, and while the artist in this case made all the music using various computer software, most artists will need to record the album first. Still, there’s a lot of potential for this kind of service both for smaller unknown artists who record at home or at concerts and it brings down the cost of getting out there considerably. Digital downloads of music is the future for sure, and not having to worry about everything that goes with a CD release opens for a lot of new music to be released.
