Creative Zii EGG Developer Edition Preview

Friday, August 28th, 2009 67 views

Creative started shipping the dev edition of the Zii EGG. From a few hours of browsing though the OS is feels like it is a long way from the consumer market. In fact recently the SDK roadmap outlining the various functionality of the Zii EGG appeared on Engadget showing a few months ahead. Below is a few photos of the video preview of the hardware and a quick and dirty look at the Plaszma OS. I stress this several times in the video that this is a developer edition so you cannot judge the OS yet- it is very rough. The hardware is what you would expect from Creative and the Zii EGG has a build quality similar to the Zen X-Fi or Zen (Newer version)- it feels plastiy and toy like but is still well made and rugged. The only thing that really bothers me and i hope that this gets changed is the screen material. I haven’t dug too far into it but it appears to be a similar screen to the Zen X-Fi, plastic with a plastic film on top with a really bad glare- definitely low end materials. As I dig into it more I will share more thoughts and videos. In the mean time check out the video and pics below and stop in our Creative Zii EGG forum for discussion.

iPhone apps: Flick Fishing, 4 Bugs, locrExplorer

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 165 views

Flick Fishing ($1) is a fishing game for the iPhone and iPod touch in which players flick their wrist to cast a fishing line and reel it in. The game features seven different locations in which to fish, from streams to oceans, and 14 tournaments for competition. Also includes is a multiplayer game, Fish Jack, where players try to catch fish up to a given target weight without exceeding it. A recent update has added two new fish, iPod integration, and integration with Plus+’s set of social and competitive achievements. 4 Bugs ($2) is a game where players try and spot the four differences between two almost identical images. Upwards of 500 images are included in the game, along with a two player mode and Facebook integration. If players are stumped on an image they can post it to Facebook and get help from their friends in finding the differences. locrExplorer ($2) can be used to browse through photos published on locr.com. locr is a popular photo sharing site similar to Flickr but with an emphasis on geotagged images. Within the application users can view photos that were taken nearby, locate photos on a map, browse through friends’ photos, post items to Twitter, and more. Users are also able to upload new images to their account with the application. FaceMixer ($1) can be used to combine multiple images of faces into one image. The application includes Facebook integration allowing users to log in and download images to use. Photos imported into the app can be moved around and resized to help fit different parts together. Finished images can then be saved to the device and sent via email or uploaded to a Facebook account. Pro Football (free) provides users with the latest news, standings, and stats from the NFL. Users can set their favorite team within the application and information for that team is then prioritized. Setting a favorite team also changes the theme of the app to match that teams colors. Altec intros 200W PC speakers, iPod boombox

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 111 views

Altec Lansing on Thursday announced the release of its new Expressionist Ultra computer speaker system composed of two multi-driver desktop speakers and a subwoofer, as well as the MIX Boombox , which sports a built-in iPod dock. The Expressionist Ultra speakers have 200W RMS of power from individual amplifiers split between the two 3-inch drivers, 1-inch neodymium dome tweeters and a 6.5-inch subwoofer. The speakers can be adjusted for treble and bass via a controller, and there are both aux-in and RCA jacks to adapt to other sources. A headphone jack is also built in. The MIX Boombox can accommodate iPods and iPhones thanks to its dock connector, as well as other Apple and other brand audio players via its twin 3.5mm auxiliary input jacks. There is also an FM tuner, and users can custom-tailor the sound thanks to a seven-band graphic equalizer. Like classic boomboxes, users can take their music away from an outlet thanks to eight D-cell batteries for 30 hours of operation and heavy-duty carrying handles. Sound is reproduced through a 5.25-inch side-firing subwoofer, two 3-inch midrange drivers and two 1-inch polypropylene cone tweeters. The MIX is shielded to prevent the well-known GSM “buzz” from an iPhone and will work without invoking airplane mode as a result. An included remote can be stored in the Boombox itself and has a built-in carabiner clip so it doesn?t get lost. The Expressionist Ultra speaker system and MIX Boombox are already shipping and priced at $200 and $300, respectively. Kicker ZKick ZK500 Review

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 55 views

Kicker and I go way back to my early days as a car audio enthusiast. Even before I had my license, as a 15 year old I started packing Kicker subwoofers in my trunk paired with various amp and crossovers. Yes, I will admit, I was one of those obnoxious kids with more subwoofers than wheels- the one who rattled your window sills from a mile away. It turned into quite the hobby/obsession even entering a few local car audio competitions and even winning a few first places. Being no stranger to car audio and Kicker products my interest was piqued when they introduced the ZKick. So I have had my eye on the ZKick dock for quite some time only having had a chance to preview it in the stores. It may be helpful to demo a dock like this in the store for features and build quality, but it can be hard to get a sense of sound quality and output in a big box store with kids screaming and Guitar Hero being played in the background. I finally got a chance to pick one of these units up and have been using it daily for the last two months.
