iPhone 3.0 firmware due at 10AM PT, 1PM ET

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 110 views

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 3.0 firmware later on Wednesday, at approximately 10AM Pacific time, or 1PM Eastern. Deployment through iTunes should be roughly synchronous worldwide, for instance occurring at 6PM in the UK, and later in Asia and the rest of Europe. One notable exception is Singapore, which is officially slated to gain the firmware a day later. The firmware adds a number of demanded features to the iPhone OS, such as tethering, MMS messaging, turn-by-turn navigation and copy, cut and paste. Movies can now be bought and rented directly from a handheld, and expanded control of third-party accessories has been enabled. JavaScript performance is said to be substantially improved, sometimes tripling the performance of the previous Safari web browser. The upgrade is free to existing iPhone owners, but costs $10 for those with an iPod touch. FileMaker debuts Bento Template Exchange, update

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 0 views

FileMaker has announced Bento 1.0.1 , an update to its mobile personal database for managing contacts, coordinating projects, and tracking bills, as well as the launch of its Bento Template Exchange . Bento for the iPhone (and iPod touch) offers users a portable database to store information ranging from birthdays to home expenses, and provides 25 pre-designed templates to start. Bento mobile can sync with the desktop version or work as a standalone, and includes integration with the address book, dialer, Safari browser and e-mail in-box. The newest version of Bento adds compatibility for the iPhone OS 3.0, and is said to resolve customer-reported issues relating to data entry, stability, and data displays. The Bento Template Exchange is a pre-designed database form that offers users a complete template without any of the information fields filled in. Users can then customize the template to better fit their needs or fill it in with pre-existing data stored on the computer. By accessing the Bento Template Exchange users can browse through, download and import templates from 15-different categories, and submit bento templates for other people to download and use. Bento for the iPhone and iPod touch is available for download from the App Store for $5, while Bento for the Mac requires Mac OS X 10.5.4 or higher and is priced at $50. TweetDeck Twitter client coming to iPhone

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 203 views

An iPhone version of TweetDeck is coming soon, says Digg founder Kevin Rose. Already in beta , the iPhone app is said to reproduce features of the desktop Twitter client — namely its signature groupings, which are organized into columns. Users should be able to flick through columns to switch groups. The app also provides Facebook-like status updates, and can highlight mentions of a user’s name. A distinguishing feature is the ability to sync with the desktop client, so that any changes are carried over into the mobile realm. It is not known when the title will appear at the App Store, or at what cost. Pioneer intros four in-dash AVIC nav systems

Monday, June 15th, 2009 91 views

Pioneer announced four new double-DIN in-car navigation and entertainment systems over the weekend, including the flagship AVIC-Z110BT which sports a 7-inch touchscreen with 1024×768 resolution that tilts out to reveal the optical drive slot. Behind that screen is 4GB of internal storage space, an optical drive capable of reading CDs and DVDs and Bluetooth functionality. There is also an optional MSN Direct tuner that gets traffic, weather and other information, though this service requires a subscription. The flagship model will also recognize voice commands when navigating, read out street names and control connected iPods. It has rear zone support as well, for screens and wireless headphones. A USB port and SD memory card slot let users play files from a wide variety of external flash storage devices. The preloaded map data covers the US, Alaska, Hawaii and Canada and more than 12 million points of interest. The mid-range AVIC-X710BT and AVIC-X910BT have a smaller, 5.8-inch, 800×480 resolution touchscreen display and the same mapping data for the navigation function, though less interactive features. An MSN Direct tuner is integrated into the X910BT and cannot be had on the X710BT, and there is DVD support, a USB port and SD memory card. Voice recognition is also built-in and, together with Bluetooth cellphone pairing and iPod support, can be used to control the portable devices. The 4.3-inch, 400×240 touchscreen-equipped AVIC-U310BT fills in at the bottom of the range, and contains 2GB of internal memory. It is iPhone and iPod compatible and has Bluetooth support. The mapping data is less comprehensive, at about 500,000 points of interest, though voice recognition and text-to-speech capabilities of the costlier new units are retained. An SD card slot lets users update the POI list to more than 12 million, or play back audio files. The U310BT is due out in July, priced at $599. The AVIC-X710BT and AVIC-X910BT are available now, and are priced at $900 and $1,100, respectively. The flagship AVIC-Z110BT is priced at $1,600.
