The unofficial iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of PwnageTool for the Mac, updated to jailbreak devices running the iPhone 3.0 firmware. Once jailbroken a handheld can load unofficial applications, and provide access to normally forbidden code. The software is not currently functional with the iPhone 3G S, but should work on first- and second-generation iPhones, as well as the first-generation iPod touch. Second-generation Touches must use redsn0w instead. The Dev Team warns that users should not yet upgrade to iPhone 3.0 if they are dependent on an unofficial carrier, as the matching unlock for the firmware, ultrasn0w , has yet to be published. PwnageTool remains safe if a person is with an official carrier like AT&T, or cellular access is unimportant. ultrasn0w is scheduled to go live later today, but has experienced delays due to YouTube errors. Yamaha on Friday upgraded its multi-room audio system with the MusicCAST2 . Similar to a Sonos system, the combination dock and touchscreen controller pipes Internet and network-attached audio over the local Ethernet or Wi-Fi network to as many as 32 different receivers. The controller supports sharing iTunes libraries thanks to TwonkyMedia’s service; the central cradle also supports media from USB devices, including iPods, and has internal Bluetooth to receive audio from cellphones. It also directly supports RealNetworks’ Rhapsody and generic Internet radio. File format support includes unprotected AAC and WMA as well as FLAC and WAV. The base MusicCAST2 system hinges on a $500 MCX-RC100 Network Music Commander but also requires at least one, separately purchased receiver. The MCX-P200 at $400 has no internal amp and is intended for complete home theaters that just need the extra source; it has an IR port to serve as a central hub for remote controlling multiple devices. The MCX-A300 costs the same but drops the IR port in favor of an amp for bookshelf speakers or other systems that aren’t necessarily fully powered. Availability hasn’t been discussed but should come very soon. Apple has begun distributing the final iPhone 3.0 firmware through iTunes. The 230MB download adds a number of demanded features to the iPhone OS, such as tethering, MMS messaging, turn-by-turn navigation and copy, cut and paste. Movies, audiobooks and TV shows can now be bought or rented from a handheld, and expanded control of third-party accessories has been enabled. JavaScript performance is said to be substantially improved, sometimes tripling the speed of the Safari web browser. Some other changes include voice memos, stereo Bluetooth, global Spotlight searches and landscape keyboards for all first-party apps. Third-party apps have gained support for features like in-app purchases and peer-to-peer networking, while the OS in general should now support autofill on the web, and automatic logins for Wi-Fi hotspots. Some 100 new features are present in total. Filed under : iPod , iPhone , software , Apple Other story tags : iPod touch Original source: feeds.macnn.com , delivered by rss-farm.ru

The Major League Baseball At-Bat 2009 app for the iPhone is gaining live video streaming , its creators say. The upgrade is meant to coincide with today’s iPhone 3.0 firmware release , and will allow people to watch complete MLB games over a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. Intermixed with footage will be in-game highlight reels. The first games to aired through At-Bat will run on June 18th however, beginning with a Cubs vs. White Sox match-up at 2:20PM Eastern. A Tigers vs. Cardinals pairing is scheduled for 8:15PM. Afterward the app will have somewhat restricted streaming, limiting viewing to out-of-market games and those not carried on national TV; Fox Saturday and ESPN Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts should thus be blocked. Live audio will still be available for local games. Filed under : iPod , iPhone , iPhone apps Other story tags : iPod touch , TV Original source: feeds.macnn.com , delivered by rss-farm.ru

Apple has published a new technical note , warning mobile phone users that it cannot guarantee third-party devices will be able to sync with iTunes. Although some devices like the new Palm Pre will work with iTunes, Apple has also made it clear that as newer versions of iTunes are released, phones that can currently sync may lose the ability. Apple goes on to mention that even though some parties claim their media players can sync, the company will not provide support. It is unclear if Apple’s policy may actually have an effect on the Pre, as the phone is identified as an iPod within iTunes. In order for iTunes to prevent the Pre from syncing it would likely have to detect hardware differences, which could be difficult since many of Palm’s current engineers are former Apple employees, and have experience working with the iPod and iPhone. The Pre is generally considered the chief rival to the iPhone.
