Apple has been contemplating Nike+-like sensors for some more extreme sports activities, a patent application reveals. While the technology is currently available for running, and has had proposed expansions for the likes of weightlifting, more intense sports have typically been left out of the equation. The patent filing suggests devices for tracking performance in skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking. Sensors attached to sports equipment would be used to track two main data points , those being speed and loft. Figures such as peaks, averages and totals could be calculated, as well as dead times, to account for problems like having to stop mid-hill. Correspondingly, dedicated batteries and controls could be necessary, such as a start-stop switch. The technology could also be independent of iPods and iPhones however, through displays providing simple statistic readouts. Sensors separate from a particular ski, board or bike might be given a range of calibration presets, ensuring accurate speed calculations. Apple’s patent application is unusually recent, have been filed only four months ago. It is credited to Curtis Vock, Peter Flentov and Dennis Darcy.
