Macs, iPods face disintegrating third quarter

Monday, May 18th, 2009 119 views

Apple may be facing a second consecutive quarter of decline in Mac sales as gauged year-over-year, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster suggests. The analyst cites new statistics from NPD Group, which show that April shipments fell 1.8 percent versus the same period in 2008. Although not as harsh as the 5 to 10 percent initially called for by Piper, the drop could foretell substantial problems with the rest of Q3, using assumptions about sales behavior in May and June. Quarterly shipments could slide by as much as 8 to 16 percent, a factor worse than Street estimates of 7 to 10 percent. Either figure would be worse than the results of Apple’s second financial quarter , which saw Mac sales dip by only 3 percent. Poor performance is being blamed on the global recession, which has until recently done little to affect Apple’s profits. Compounding problems are new NPD figures on iPods, which show that player sales plummeted 9 percent in April. Similarly, while average selling prices remained consistent for Macs, the same value for iPods dropped 11 percent. Apple will likely ship 9.5 to 10.5 million iPods during Q309, according to Munster, as compared to the 11 million reached in Q308. Apple has not seen a slump in year-over-year iPod figures since the product’s 2001 introduction. Guide to Audiobooks on MP3 Players

Sunday, May 17th, 2009 191 views

Those that know me know that my MP3 player has more podcasts and audiobooks on it than music. I’m out and about a few hours a day and have a job on the side of the studies which is more or less a muscle memory job. Listening to the same music over and over would drive me crazy, so some years ago I started using podcasts and audiobooks to keep myself entertained instead. When it comes to getting audiobooks, you have several options, from libraries to audiobook services online. Then you have to select a player – if you want Audible support, you need a player that can support it and so on. Then there are players which have special audiobook sections that give you extra options regardless of what format the book is in, while others treat audiobooks as music. Read on for a guide on how to get started with audiobooks.

iPod touches and nanos to gain cameras?

Friday, May 15th, 2009 115 views

Not one but two models of iPod should gain cameras in their next major update, claims the English edition of MacBidouille . A anonymous source for the website insists that both the Touch and the Nano will gain cameras, though aspects such as megapixel ratings or support for autofocus and flash remain uncertain. If identical to one strongly rumored for the next iPhone, the cameras could be rated at 3.2 megapixels. Backing the report is a recent job opening at Apple, which initially requested a “Camera Engineering Project Manager to drive the design, development and integration of camera modules across iPhone and iPod.” Though the listing was later altered to omit iPod references, analysts have suggested that Apple may be interested in augmenting the Touch to differentiate it from other iPods and/or increase its appeal next to the iPhone. Such a policy would not explain adding a camera to the Nano, however; the player also offers little space for a sensor and lens, and would naturally require custom software. The source makes a separate claim that future iPhones will retain the size and shape as the iPhone 3G, in spite of rumors. A handful of reports have hinted at a smaller, cheaper companion to the main iPhone line. Replug Headphone Adapter Review

Friday, May 15th, 2009 258 views

Having players rendered useless due to a broken headphone jack is annoying. As we speak, one of my players is in for repair as the jack got loose and started losing audio on the left channel. The same thing happened with another player last fall when I was working a lot out in the woods and the cable got stuck on every single tree I came across. There really isn’t that much to do about such a problem once it has happened, but luckily there is something you can do to prevent it. Replug is a range of cables and adapters that are designed to break off naturally if the cable is yanked. I bought their basic adapter to see if it would help save my players. Read on for a review.
