iTunes movies and TV shows coming to iPhone?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 148 views

Apple may soon allow the iPhone and iPod touch to directly access movies and TV shows from the iTunes Store, a leak suggests. In using an ad-supported version of Twitterfon, one user claims to have encountered a banner promoting not just purchases of videos from iTunes, but also movie rentals. At present the main means of shuttling iTunes video to an Apple handheld is through sync with a Mac or PC; the one exception is podcasts. Tapping the banner ad is said to bring up a browser similar to that for the mobile Music Store, with options viewing Featured, Top Ten or Podcast videos, as well as custom searches. A number of movies and TV shows are already listed as available, although attempting to load details on an item only produces an error message. The browser is similarly lacking in some key art assets, namely the promotional “squish” boxes that Apple uses throughout the iTunes Store. Should Apple indeed open up all videos to handhelds, it is likely that most titles will only be available through Wi-Fi, due to the intense bandwidth demand. The company currently limits all individual 3G iTunes transfers to 10MB. Such a limit could in theory be raised, however, if a next-generation iPhone supports bandwidth up to 7.2Mbps. Apple reverses decision on Eucalyptus app

Monday, May 25th, 2009 163 views

Apple has once again overturned one of its decisions on approving an iPhone app, the developer of Eucalyptus says. The software is an e-book reader with an emphasis on physicality, mimicking the experience of turning a real page in addition to providing more print-like fonts. The fonts can be resized through pinching commands, which preserve proper formatting. Eucalyptus was initially rejected however as a result of access to Project Gutenberg, a service which offers free books in the public domain, such as titles by Charles Dickens and the Baron d’Holbach. Among the other books available is the Kama Sutra , which an Apple employee identified as having “inappropriate sexual content.” The work is centuries old, though, and one of India’s most famous pieces of religious writing. Apple has changed its mind on a number of “offensive” apps in recent weeks, for instance approving the submissions of Tweetie 1.3 and NIN Access 1.0.3. Still banned is Me So Holy , an app which let users insert their own photo into a painting of Jesus. It is believed that Apple may use future ratings on apps to permit the sale of controversial titles, without engendering developer frustration. Touch Screen vs Tactile Controls

Monday, May 25th, 2009 0 views

One of the big technological advancements in the last few years has been the introduction of touch screens into consumer electronics, such as MP3 players. If you really look at the specs of the most popular players today, you see a lot of old tech with a touch screen on top and a few UI tweaks to go with it. While some people love this new method of controlling a player, there are also a lot of people who can’t stand it and swear by hardware controls for all it’s worth. Slow, clumsy and superfluous are some of the accusations that come from that side of the camp. Are touch screens really that bad, or is it time to let go of the static plastic knobs sticking out of everything? Read on for the pros and cons of the various control methods.
