Purchasing Cheap Laptops as Alternatives to Desktop PCs

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 151 views

Buying a laptop these days is often more practical than buying a desktop equivalent. Not so long ago, desktop computers would be the equipment that most people would choose for several reasons, such as larger screen sizes, cheaper when comparing similar spec machines, and so-on. However, more recently laptops have certainly increased in popularity as the shear number of brands and fast advancement of technology has driven down the price.

Another big attraction to laptops is that they can be taken wherever you go. Rather than having to sit at the office desk, users can surf the internet or work in front of the TV, on the train, or when on vacation. Users can just connect to one of the best wireless routers appliances in order to get good internet coverage, and stay online whenever you need to use it. No longer do you have to sit in the office to use your computer.

Some of the top laptop computers, although sometimes pricey, have some great features and accessories to use. Blu-Ray DVD players, built-in webcams, fingerprint readers, top quality graphics chips and speedy CPUs are just a few of these. One of the most popular brands of notebooks around at the moment are Apple Mac laptops as they are really stylish in design, but also have great build quality and top performance.

For those on somewhat of a budget, there are many cheap laptops on sale that are more than good enough if you want to surf the internet, or do tasks like word processing. The main costs of laptops come with the speed of the processor and the graphics card, which are mostly utilized by media professionals and people that want to play the latest games.

Student laptops are some of the cheapest priced computers, purely for the reason that they only need to use basic applications to do their work, but also don’t have much disposable income to spend on the top of the range laptops. Searching online can be a great place to buy such laptops because there is such a wide choice, and a lot of stores that sell laptops. By taking a bit of time searching you may even find some good deals on revamped laptops which can be great purchases.

Laptops that have been refurbished are basically like new, but cost a fraction of what they would when bought brand new. Although you might only find laptop models that are a few years old in refurbished condition, they are still good enough for the majority of computer users.

Apple iPod Software Reviews: Ancient Frog

We’re announcing a new promotion here at AppSmile.com – The Featured App Giveaway Contest!

How does it work, you say?

Well just visit AppSmile.com and Leave a Reply (requires registration, and don’t worry we never share your goods with anyone!) at the bottom of the Featured App’s review. Then you will automatically be entered to win that app at the end of the promotion. When the promotion ends (usually one week long), a winner will be randomly selected and will recieve an email with the app’s US iTunes promo code included. Just go to the iTunes Store, click on Redeem, enter your code, and the App will download for free!

The iTunes App Store is loaded with puzzle games. In fact, this was primarily the first game style to arrive when the App Store went public. So, the question is – can anything noteworthy still be created in the puzzle game genre? If you have your doubts…you need to check out Ancient Frog. Ancient Workshop brought out this ambidextrous amphibian on February 11, 2009.
He hopped on to our AppSmile iPhones this week so we’ve had some time to poke around with him.

The point of Ancient Frog is to manipulate your toad just so for him to catch a fly that’s right out of reach – and probably driving him nuts! Drag the hands and feet (or are they paws?) with your finger. The tough part is that you can only move one appendage at a time and there are designated locations to place them. Moving one hand to a certain place may prevent you from moving a foot to another place later. So, much thought and planning is involved in deciding how to get to the fly. Check out our game play video below to see what we mean.

When you start the game for the first time, you’ll be presented with instructions. These explained a lot and can be found if you ever go back to the first level. Kinda confusing, but it works.

Ancient Frog boasts 100 levels and 6 different frog species. This will keep you busy for a while since the puzzles get increasingly difficult. There isn’t a time limit, thank goodness, but Par is provided in each puzzle. Par means the number of moves it “should” take you to get to the fly.

The frog renderings are beautiful and the movement is realistic. You should be impressed with the sound effects. They put you right in the middle of the Amazon.

Our AppSmile team anticipates that this game will be hoppin’ to the top of the iTunes Apps list in no time.

Archos 2 and Archos 4 Back to Flash Basics

Saturday, April 4th, 2009 81 views

The last non PMP and flash based player Archos released was the 105. I have one sitting around the office but never stirred up enough gumption to write a review on it since I couldn’t stop yawning every time I used it. Not that it was bad, just nothing exciting and a bit out of date even at its release. This time around we hope that its different. At the very lease it has a nice new modern design and less clunky like the older generation Archos players. The Archos 2 will follow the 104 and 105 with a simple candy bar form factor, sporting a 1.8” 128×160 pixel screen. This will come in 4GB and 8GB sizes. The Archos 4 is a bit more elusive at this time since we don’t have pics yet- but this will be a 4” flash player coming in 16GB and 32GB capacities. Could Archos be killing off their hard drive models? Likely not, but it appears that they are adding a healthy mix of flash. [ Amazon via ArchosLounge ]

How To Make Your Own Super Cable

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 0 views

Yesterday we joked about a manufactures getting together and releasing a single transfer cable to alleviate the need to buy all kinds of different cables. Some bought this April first joke until they saw pictures of this massive cable below the fold. While a single cable will forever be a pipe dream and the proprietary vs standard debate will go on, you can easily and cheaply whip up your own “MediaWire” as seen in our April fools post. Read on to make your own.

Manufactures Agree On a Standard Transfer Cable

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 65 views

There are upsides and downsides to having proprietary cables, we have had this debate before. The upsides being the ability to use your player on a doc or with accessories that require more than just a USB connection. But the two biggest problems are you need to carry an extra cable when traveling and docks and other accessories are not cross brand compatible. This is all about to change. In a bid to alleviate consumer confusion and an open source accessory ecosystem Microsoft, Apple, SanDisk, Sony, and Samsung have teamed up on the what they have dubbed the “MediaWire” (previous code named “RX-1″). The standard has been set but they have yet to decide on manufacturing facilities for this new “super cable”, though I have been told it will likely be available near the end of Q2 of 2009. There are some photos of this cable below. Keep in mind that this is a prototype, but expect a more refined version of this “one size fits all” cable packaged with your next player.
